Maker-checker

Maker-checker is a control in which one party prepares a change and a different, named party approves it, so nobody approves their own work. Applied to AI, the model or agent is the maker and a named person is the checker. In elan1, both the maker and the checker are recorded in the proof record.

In one sentence: One party prepares a change and a different, named party approves it. For AI, the model is the maker.

01In more detail

What it means in practice

Maker-checker, also called four-eyes, is a long-standing control in banking and finance: nobody approves their own work. Applied to AI, the model or agent prepares the change or the decision, and a named person checks it before it takes effect.

In elan1, answers below your confidence threshold go to a reviewer in elan1 Decide, and any write that follows is held for a named approver in elan1 Govern where the rules ask. Both the maker and the checker are recorded.

02Where this shows up in elan1

Decisions routed to review in elan1 Decide, and every held write in elan1 Govern, where the approver is never the asker.
