A seal is the method that turns a proof record into its digest. elan1 uses Seal v6, which is frozen, so the same 16 fields always give the same SHA-256 digest. Because the method is published, anyone can recompute a record's digest and check that it links to the next record in the chain.
In one sentence: The method that turns a proof record into its digest: Seal v6, frozen.
01In more detail
Seal v6 computes SHA-256 over a length-prefixed preimage of the 16 fields. The digest becomes the next record's F03 prev_digest, which is what links the chain.
Because the method is frozen, anyone holding the records can recompute every digest the same way. From L2, the sealed digest is also signed.
02Where this shows up in elan1
Rung 8 PROOF; the specimen stamp; the L1 verification steps.
