A hash chain is a series of records in which each one carries the digest of the record before it. Altering any record changes its digest and breaks every later link, so the change is evident. elan1 chains its proof records with SHA-256 under Seal v6, through the prev_digest field.
In one sentence: Records where each one carries the digest of the one before, so altering one breaks every later link.
01In more detail
Each record's digest is computed over its own fields, including the previous record's digest. Change any earlier record and its digest changes, so the next record's link no longer matches, and nor does any link after it.
A hash chain shows that something changed; it does not show who changed it, and it does not stop the change. That is why elan1 adds signatures and outside timestamps from L2 Attested.
02Where this shows up in elan1
